The Washington State Visitor's Guide is the ultimate (free!) guidebook on what to do, see and experience while visiting Washington. Somewhere in its 130-pages, you'll find answers and ideas on getting the most out of a visit. On page 11, you'll find information on traveling by train, car, ferry, cruise ship and plane, a list of mountain passes open and closed during the winter month, and tips on traveling to and from Canada. Included is a tear-out road map that lists emergency phone numbers, quick reference driving times and minimum driving distances on state highways. A bunch of free guides and stuff is available by calling 800-544-1800.
While most mountain passes in Washington stay open throughout the year, some are temporarily closed during or after winter storms to allow for snow removal and safe travel. Others are closed annually for the winter due to excessive snow pack. It's a good idea to check first before you head uphill. Mountain pass reports are available within the State from 888-766-4636, in the greater Seattle area, call 206-368-4499.
Auto Tours is only one of a group of interesting brochures that describes in detail the best tour routes in the State, including the popular Cascade Loop, a 400-mile trip that crosses the Cascade Range twice and brings you to the major attractions on the east and west side of the mountains. Additional brochures include Family Fun, Behind The Scenes, What's Cooking? On The Water, Scenic Wonders and others.
A main source of information and free publications is The Washington State Tourism Office of Trade and Economic Development (Box 42500, Olympia WA 98504 - 360-725-5069). Additional information guides is available from the Washington State Visitor's Guide (Box 10364, Riverton NJ 08076 - yes...New Jersey!) Got a question about your upcoming trip to Washington? You can speak to a Washington State Travel Counselor any day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific Standard Time at 360-725-5052.
Did you know: the most snowfall ever measured in the U.S. fell at the Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington just a few years ago; no other state in the U.S. produces more apples than Washington; nearly one hundred Orca whales in three family pods live in the San Juan Islands area during the summer months; back in 1971, a hijacker named D.B. Cooper jumped out of an airplane over southwest Washington with $200,000 in ransom cash and has never been found.
If you're into doing outdoor stuff, you might want to contact The Mountaineers (206-284-6310) for information on biking, hiking and mountain climbing; Northwest Steelhead and Salmon Council of Trout Unlimited (360-754-2131) for guidance on sport fishing; Washington State Outfitters and Guides Association (877-ASK-WOGA); Backcountry Horsemen of Washington (360-876-7739) and Professional River Outfitters of Washington (206-726-4046).
Washington boasts one of the largest and busiest State park systems in the U.S. It ranks sixth among all 50 U.S. States in number of areas managed, fourth in day-use attendance and eighth in number of overnight visitors served. There are 125 parks (21 marine parks) covering over 260,000 acres and offering over eight thousand campsites. If you're into outdoor activities, you can hike 640 trail miles, ski 300 miles or swim at thirty-five designated beach areas without once leaving the park system.
To reserve campsites at dozens of State Parks, call Reservations Northwest toll-free at 800-452-5687. Phone lines are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. with extended hours in the summer months. Monday and Tuesday mornings are the busiest call-times. During the spring and summer it is best to call later in the day and later in the week. Plan ahead as far as possible to avoid the rush - phoning on Wednesday or later in the week for the following week or weekend is advisable for last-minute planners.
All kinds of camping information is available from the
November through March is Washington's off-season. This is a great time to visit the Evergreen State and take advantage of some hot deals and top attractions, minus the crowds. Visitors will find most of the stuff you pay full price for during the on-season marked down to lure visitors into the States. Discounts are everywhere; and to sample what the big cities have to offer, you can start with the Seattle-King County Visitor & Convention Bureau (520 Pike Street, Seattle WA 98101 - 206-461-5800.
Over 20,000 gray whales migrate past the Washington coast each year on their journey north from Baja California to the summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. Typically this occurs between March and late May. These gentle giants can often be spotted from vantage points on land. They hug the coast and stop to rest, feed, and mate. Chartered excursions are available in Westport at the entrance of Grays Harbor. When choosing a guide be sure they are licensed and familiar with federal regulations regarding proper viewing procedures. Beginning in March, the Westport Maritime Museum offers weekend seminars on whales and whale watching - admission is $1. Mosquito Fleet's San Juan Islands Orca whale watching tour is a full-day, narrated cruise departing from Seattle and Everett. Information is available from Mosquito Fleet (1724 West Maine View Drive, Everett WA 98201 - 415-252-6800). Tours are also conducted by Island Mariner Cruises (5 Harbor Esplanade, Bellingham WA 98225 - 360-734-8866).
Washington State Ferries operates the largest ferry fleet in the United States. Twenty-five ferries cross Puget Sound and its inland waterways, carrying over 23 million passengers to 20 different ports of call. From Tacoma, Washington, to Sidney, British Columbia, they travel up and down the Sound, acting as a marine highway for commercial users, tourists and daily commuters alike. Traffic is heavy during the peak seasons and some ferries are loaded on a first-come, first-served basis. Boarding a motorhome is usually no problem.
Different ferry routes offer different sources of information. You can call any of these toll-free numbers from inside Washington state for schedules and fares: 800-888-2535; 800-633-1589; 888-373-8522; or 800-642-0066. You can sail from Anacortes through the San Juan Islands to Sidney BC on Vancouver Island. Reservations can be made by calling 250-381-1551. You'll be crossing international boundaries and will be subject to either U.S. and/or Canadian Customs service and immigration inspection, the standard going-to-and-from-the-U.S. routine. You probably know the drill. Questions? The U.S. Customs Office can be reached in the area at 206-553-4676. Canadian Customs is at 604-535-9754.
There are more than 70 farmer's markets around the State offering flowers, produce, homemade crafts and other stuff. Who's offering what and where information is available in a free guide from the Washington State Farmer's Market Association (206-706-5898).
Over one third of Washington State is covered in parks and national forests. Their diversity is unparalleled, from Pacific Ocean beaches and temperate rain forests to glacier-clad peaks, deserts, and river gorges. There are petrified forests and Indian petroglyphs. Wildlife is abundant and the scenery is breathtaking.
Washington is home to some of the country's most spectacular national park lands - Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, Mount Saint Helens National Monument, North Cascades National Park, and Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The Washington State parks system is extremely popular - attracting millions of visitors annually to a variety of well-maintained campgrounds and unique day-use facilities.
Washington's parks offer recreational opportunities for every interest: camping, climbing, hiking and backpacking, fishing and shellfishing, boating, wildlife viewing and photography, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking, skiing and boarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, berry picking, mushroom gathering, horseback riding, rockhounding, beachcombing, spelunking, and more.
There are entrance fees at most Washington State national parks, and backcountry permits are required for all overnight stays in the national parks. Trail passes are also required for many national forests and wilderness areas in Washington. Day use at all Washington State parks is free, however, there are fees for camping, moorage, boat launches, and some group facilities. In winter, permits for sno-park facilities are required in participating State parks and national forests. National Park campgrounds are on a first-come, first-served basis, except for Mount Rainier where reservations for certain campgrounds are required July 1 through Labor Day.
