The following is an excerpt from the diary and notes of John and Liz Plaxton as they traveled along Highway 16 in May. ...
This is a very clean, very orderly and quiet Provincial Park, with some sites adjacent to a creek. It lulled us to sleep with the soothing hiss of water flowing over rocks and boulders. This park does not accept reservations, and I suspect you had best plan on pulling in early in the afternoon or morning if you want to get a site during July and August. (Almost all sites in all parks have been available to us in May, which is an excellent reason for traveling early in the year.)
Dry and aged firewood was provided freely; unfortunately this amenity might not be available in future years. We toasted cheese buns and roasted our first wieners of the year over glowing coals of spruce and birch. It is difficult to surpass that first mouth-watering bite into a warm hotdog in a toasted bun filled with butter-fried onions. But because Id forgotten the wiener sticks, I had to use metal shish-ka-bob lances which were much too short. The wieners were polish sausages, I had smoked.
Contrary to the description in our two-year-old magazine The Milepost, which read "Short trail to remains from Cassiar Hydraulic Mining Co. gold-sluicing operations here." These remains have been nonexistent for over a decade. Still, the walk up the trail overlooking that area was mild exercise and a pleasant walk through the woods.
Next to the tall cedar in our campsite, we discovered a tiny grave. The tombstone, which was a mousetrap made in China, bore this hand-printed inscription in pencil. "RIP; Mouse; 15. Sept. 97; by this trap; on this trip; by Kleanza Creek; T. AC from Germany; Were sorry."
I wonder how long it will stay there? If I had known of its existence before getting ready to leave, I would have made a little picket fence as an enclosure.
